A wonderful bookstore curating a nuanced and rich selection of books. In particular, check out the books they publish, which covers different facets of Malaysian and Penang history, and get recommendations from the storekeepers. Whether you're looking at more "traditional" history anthologies, collected oral ones from Malaysia's diverse communities or heavier content addressing colonialism and contemporary systemic violence, they will have something for you to walk out with. Or sit in their cozy corner to have a flip through your shortlist.

Me and my family stumbled upon this nook of a bookshop by accident when we visited penang last month.

It was raining and we had found a parking right outside this shop and was waiting for rain to stop before we start making our journey around chulia area by foot. The shop look nice frm the outside so me and my family decided to go in and we were greeted by Mr Fahmi who was manning the shop that day.

We told him how nice is the shop and how beautiful some of the furnitures are, we notice that the shop focus mostly on malaysian author or books related to msia so we kind of able to relate to what he is selling. My wife and daughter likes to read books so they were already on their way to look for book of their interest while i was chit chatting with Fahmi.

IDK how many times have i visited Penang but this time around i really felt a strong connection to learn about the history of Penang (maybe due to age) so i asked him what book should i get that is booth visually and narratively good, he pull out a couple of books along with other titles which he think would interest me. In the end we bought 3 books and 1 map.

All the while in the shop we exchange so many about ourselves and he shared his knowledge about books, authors and a history of Penang.

This bookshop really pulls you into reading, the way the book is displayed and the shelving design makes you feel like its more of a library than a bookshop. They have some interesting title in the shop and Fahmi really can pull out some good ones if you tell him what you are after.

This place is a gem in Penang and i hope it will remain as it is.

I would DEFINITELY DEFINITELY recommend anyone who is looking to buy books in Penang to check out this place.

This is definitely my favourite bookshop in the whole of Malaysia. Why? Well, first of all it is a curated selection chosen by someone very knowledgeable who supports writers with diverse interests in Malaysian stories and publishers. Second, the recommendations I got from the person in the shop were for books perfectly suited to my interests. That happened when I visited in June 2022. It happened again this morning. Thank you Fahmi Mustaffa for your gift of finding the books I wanted to read. 🙏🏽

We stumbled upon this gem of a bookstore while wandering around Georgetown.

Other reviewers have said it all about the selection and Fahmi, the owner. I would just add that over the past 30 years I've patronized other boutique bookstores like Silverfish and Sunda Shelves, and Gerakbudaya.

The curated selection at Areca Books, for me, is far far superior. The proof is that even after 30 years of buying books I bought 4 at Areca after alf an hour of browsing, which is all the time I had that day.

I'll be back next time I'm in Penang, and will make sure I have a whole afternoon to spare 🙂

It is an amazing and unique bookstore whose owner is highly knowledgeable about the books in the shop and intellectual in overall. Fahmi also reads the books in the shop before giving people suggestions about them.

There is a nice selection of books on Malaysia, Malaysian culture, Islam, and orientalism. Since we are both interested in history, we had a nice chat and exchanged our ideas and opinions regarding many issues such as the history of colonialism, the spread of the religion of Islam in the Malay archipelago, and my country, Turkey.

I love all the books in the shop and wanted to buy all of them but I bought a few books due to my limited budget. Apart from buying books, I spent a very quality and valuable time here. I hope our paths cross again with this bookstore and its owner.

Very friendly staff; the staff I met is probably an avid reader, as he was knowledgeable when I asked for a suggestion. He handed me a decent suggestion regarding Malay folklore.
